SEO has a reputation for being mysterious — and a lot of that is deliberate. Agencies charge thousands a month selling "SEO magic," but the fundamentals that actually drive rankings are genuinely simple. Here's what you need to know.

The three pillars

Modern SEO rests on three legs. Get these right and you're ahead of 80% of businesses.

1. Technical SEO

This is the boring-but-critical stuff:

  • Your site loads fast (under 3 seconds on mobile)
  • It works on phones without breaking
  • Your pages have unique titles and meta descriptions
  • Your URLs are clean (/services/web-design, not /?p=247)
  • You have a valid XML sitemap submitted to Google Search Console
  • Your robots.txt isn't accidentally blocking Google
  • You use HTTPS everywhere

If your site fails at technical SEO, nothing else matters. Google won't rank a broken site.

2. On-page SEO

Each page needs to answer a specific question or target a specific topic:

  • Title tag clearly describes what the page is about and includes your main keyword
  • H1 matches (or complements) the title
  • Content actually answers the question thoroughly — ideally better than the pages currently ranking
  • Internal links point to related pages on your site
  • Images have descriptive alt text

The trick to on-page SEO is simple: write the page a real human would find most useful. Google has gotten very good at recognizing genuine helpfulness.

3. Authority (backlinks)

Google trusts sites that other trustworthy sites link to. Building authority means:

  • Getting featured in industry publications, local news, or directories
  • Having genuinely shareable content
  • Being active in your local community (for local SEO)
  • Earning mentions and citations from partners, suppliers, and customers

Do not buy backlinks. It's a short-term win that often becomes a long-term penalty.

The local SEO shortcut

If you're a local business (plumber, dentist, café, consultant serving a specific region):

  1. Claim your Google Business Profile and fill out everything.
  2. Get real customer reviews — consistently. This is the single biggest lever for local rankings.
  3. Keep your name, address, phone number (NAP) identical across every directory.
  4. Build location-specific pages if you serve multiple areas.

This alone will get you ahead of most local competitors.

What doesn't work anymore

  • Keyword stuffing (Google penalizes it)
  • Buying links (detected within weeks)
  • AI-written content with no human editing (Google's helpful content system targets this)
  • Obsessing over keyword density
  • Meta keywords (not used by Google since 2009)
  • Submitting to 500 directories

SEO is compound interest. One month of work produces almost nothing. Twelve months of consistent work builds an asset that brings you customers for free, forever.

If your "SEO agency" is charging you $2K/month and not publishing new content, improving site speed, or building real authority, you're being scammed. Walk away.
